Does Christianity Belong in Politics?
Raise of hands: Who, in their conversations during this political election season have heard the words “Christianity does not belong in politics” or “Keep your religions beliefs out of it”, or “What they believe about Christianity does not matter”, etc.? Suspect Supreme Court rulings and phrasing aside, what role does Christianity really play in politics?
Does Christianity belong in politics? My response, phrased in current political election phrasing–Are You kidding me!?! What a stupid question. No duh Christianity belongs in politics, why are you even thinking otherwise??? I mean seriously! Kicking God out of day-to-day life seems to be working really well…NOT!
OK, let me tone it down a bit. Does Christianity belong in politics–Absolutely. When America outlawed God from schools and government, it entered into a slow, but steepening nose dive that has reached critical velocity. America is investing more into social welfare and entitlement programs than ever before with no end in sight. We invest more in schools than ever before…but student achievement plummets. We invest billions into recovery and treatment programs, yet addiction and mental health issue run rampant and are only getting worse. We have kicked God out of our lives and have replaced him with rampant and reckless spending and the results have been predictably horrid. If we do not pull out of this nose dive NOW, the crash will be tragic and devastating.
How can we save this Nation from its current trajectory? It is only possible through the daily guidance and following of Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.
What does biblical Christianity bring to the table, outside of the greatest, most beneficial moral foundation to be found? It brings:
– The concept that politicians are eternally accountable for their actions and behavior.
– The belief that life has value, from conception to death.
– The belief that we are created with certain inalienable rights…rights not granted by a person, but by a Creator.
– The belief that all people are created equal.
– An understanding that people, left without restraint, typically will not behave very honorably.
– An understanding of God’s design for families, communities, societies, and nations.
– God’s blessing upon the Nation.
So, when someone says that Christianity and our beliefs do not belong in politics, they are saying that none of the above should be brought into politics. Is it no wonder we are in the precarious trajectory we are in?
WHAT IS POLITICS?
It seems many Christians have a wrong fundamental picture of politics. Politics at its core is about setting policy and direction. It is about selecting people to represent us to make local, regional, and national policy. These policies are put into action through laws, regulations, budget, taxes, and every other aspect of Government interaction in our lives. Christianity belongs in politics.
The Enemy has used a brilliant tactic to drive Christians out of the political arena. Politics is mired and tainted with corruption, lies, bribes, and self-serving purposes. Good Christians are told to avoid and stay away from such settings. The Enemy has effectively driven good Christian men and women away from this arena and we are paying the price. Fortunately, Jesus demonstrated that true love goes to where it is needed. Christianity belongs in politics.
Are you more comfortable with morally unconstrained people setting policy and laws about: education, health care, national defense, business regulation, environmental stewardship, land use, banking and monetary policy, taxation, family law? Who do you trust to appoint qualified, morally guided judges and military leaders to defend the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights? Christianity belongs in politics.
Policy affects every area of our lives, from the moment you wake until you sleep and even as you sleep, policy decisions surround you. Do you really want to leave policy setting to those who reject God and Christian values?!? Or, would we be better off as a people and nation if we selected people who are guided by God and the Bible as they consider, craft, and set policy?
Christianity belongs in politics.
